Longtime Companion (1990) *
Perhaps the first film to put a human
face on the AIDS epidemic, Longtime Companion follows the lives of a small
circle of friends from the first mention of the disease in the New York Times in
1980. First referred to as "Gay-Related-Immune-Disorder," we watch the
effect of the disease as it devastates the lives of our protagonists. Jumping
between Manhattan and Fire Island, vignettes carry us from the
it-couldn't-happen-to-me mentality of the early days of the disease to the
invasive effect it has had on all of our lives, today. The title of the film
comes from the New York Times' refusal to acknowledge homosexual relationships
in their obituary section during this period. Instead, survivors were referred
to as "Longtime Companions" of the deceased.

PEEGE - (1972) “Your laugh would always make me happy,” the young man whispers to his aged grandmother, Peege, who, now blind and helpless, seems to be awaiting death. This touching, poignant film portrays a family’s Christmas visit to their grandmother, a patient in a nursing home, and their sense of despair and isolation as they struggle vainly to communicate. But when other family members leave the room, one grandson stays behind, touching her hand and her hair and reminiscing about Peege as a laughing, fun-loving person. The young man leaves, tearful and unsure whether he penetrated her loneliness. Director Randal Kleiser's camera, deftly lingering on her face, delivers the subtle yet clear answer. This award-winning film stars Bruce Davison and Jeanette Nolan, and was produced by David Knapp and Leonard Berman. "Peege" was one of 25 films added on Dec. 27, 2007, to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, which recognized this renowned production as "extremely moving." Now available on DVD with audio commentary by Randal Kleiser and Bruce Davison. Visit them online at Phoenix Learning Group. |

CRIMINAL MINDS
"Demonology" 11 March 2009
Prentiss learns from an old friend, John Cooley, that their mutual
friend, Matthew Benton, just died from a heart attack. Prentiss had not seen
either man in several years, both for different reasons. John also mentions that
Matthew thought he was going to be killed just like "T. Valentine". In
searching, Garcia does find someone matching that name in the area who recently
died from dehydration. There are similarities between the two deaths but no
medical rationale for tying the two together as murders. A third person in the
area then dies in a similar way but again no medical indication of an unnatural
death or rationale tying the death to the first two. However, Prentiss and
Rossi, in particular within the team, are certain the three deaths are related
and that they are indeed murders. They have to tread lightly and carefully since
the families of the deceased refuse to speak to the FBI - especially Matthew's
family who know, and do not like, Prentiss - and since there is no official case
as the police have not sanctioned one. The investigation gets more complicated
for the team when they find who they believe is the murderer.

Kingdom Hospital 2004 - ... Dr. Stegman
Stephen
King's Kingdom Hospital is the haunting new 15-hour drama series created directly for television by
the award-winning, bestselling master of horror. Using Lars Von Trier's Danish
miniseries Riget (a.k.a. The Kingdom) as a point of inspiration,
King tells the terrifying story of The Kingdom, a hospital with a bizarre
population that includes a nearly blind security guard, a nurse who regularly
faints at the sight of blood and a paraplegic artist whose recovery is a step
beyond miraculous. When patients and staff hear the tortured voice of a little
girl crying through the halls, they are dismissive of any suggestion of
mysticism or unseen powers … but at their own peril.
